Icelandic Mixtape

Songs from the land of fire and ice aboard the NG Explorer.

Gisli and his family are the owners and only full-time inhabitants of Vigur, a colorful little island home to thousands of eider ducks, guillemots, and arctic terns. One of his favorite artists is Bubbi Morthens, an artist multiple people mention to me throughout the trip. In true Icelandic fashion, Gisli's cousin happens to be married to Bubbi's cousin.

Berglind and Gauti run tours for us in the morning before opening up their hotdog stand in Djupivogur (Gauti was also previously the mayor). There's an impromptu cover in a train station of a 13th century Icelandic hymn that makes him tear up nearly anytime he watches it.

Sirrý is applying to university and hoping to go to Reykjavik this upcoming year. She tells me what all the kids are listening to these days.

Svavar is an incredible Icelandic musician who came onboard to play for us (and didn't even get mad when we asked him to play "Ja Ja Ding Dong"). I wanted to buy a CD of his for my dad, and the album cover that caught my eye just so happened to be designed by his daughter. He recommended me a song of his friend's that he loves for the playlist, but my favorite of his is called Úlfar.
